Question
I have submitted my application for long term disability to Mass Mutual and I want to know how long it should take them to make a decision?
Answer
Dr. Stein. This is a great question and it depends on multiple factors. In most cases Mass Mutual and all of the disability insurance companies will take at least 30 days to make a decision, but I would say the normal time is 60-90 days. The decision usually takes closer to 90 days because disability insurance companies usually ask a claimant to submit a Claimant Statement and an Attending Physician Statement from your treating doctor(s). This is the bare bones information and it’s intentionally done this way so that the disability company can delay your claim and then keep asking for additional information. When I prepare an application for a client, I ask my client for an extensive list of information that I know the disability company will eventually ask for. I then work with my client and client’s doctors to create a complete application package that contains everything the disability company could possibly require. By being prepared and detailed in your presentation you avoid extensive delays and give yourself the best chance to get your application approved the first time.
