AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company (formerly The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States) was founded in 1859 as The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States (The Equitable), and is headquartered in New York, NY.
AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company is a “financial protection” company and a provider of life insurance, annuity, long-term disability insurance and investment products and services. The company’s products and services are distributed to individuals and business owners through its retail distribution channel, AXA Advisors, LLC; to the financial services market through its wholesale distribution channel, AXA Distributors, LLC; and to corporations and their employees through its corporate distribution channel, Corporate Markets.
AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company is the principle insurance subsidiary of AXA Financial Inc., which is part of the global AXA Group. AXA Group’s operations are geographically diverse, with major operations in Europe, North America, and the Asia/Pacific region. The United States arm of AXA is AXA Equitable. The takeover of The Equitable, a well known American insurer, came in 1991. AXA Equitable consists of many subsidiaries; AXA Advisors, LLC, AXA Network, AXA Equitable Life Insurance, Mutual of New York, US Financial Life, and Alliance Bernstein.
In 1996 AXA bought Union des Assurances De Paris (UAP), France’s largest insurer, becoming AXA-UAP, before reverting to the name AXA in 1999. Then in February 1999 AXA acquired Guardian Royal Exchange. In May 2000 AXA acquired all shares it did not already own in Sun Life & Provincial Holdings. On 14 June 2006 AXA acquired the leading Swiss insurance company Winterthur Group from Credit Suisse for approximately $12 billion.
In 2008 AXA posted $673.5 billion in assets and $923 million in profits.
