New Research Reveals Potential "Cause" of Fibromyalgia and Objective Test
The Medical Daily journal recently reported a “breakthrough” regarding research into the cause of Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia, as a diagnosis, has instigated much controversy in the medical community, with many believing that the disease was only in the patient’s head.
Researchers from a biopharmaceutical company, Intidyn, along with Albany Medical College, found that the ultimate cause of Fibromyalgia pain may be due to an excess of “sensory nerve fibers around specialized blood vessel structures located in the palms of the hands.” Your skin contains blood vessels which regulate blood flow to either allow the blood to flow and radiate heat from your skin, or to stop the flow to keep body heat inside when it is cold. Special nerve endings are located around “bridge” areas of the blood vessels and control the opening and closing of the blood flow. The researchers discovered that Fibromyalgia patients (only women were studied) had an abnormally high number of these nerve endings.
The researchers believe that the excess nerve endings could be interfering with the blood flow to the muscles throughout the body, leading to a build-up of lactic acid and inflammation. This, in turn, would cause the muscle pain, aching, and fatigue suffered by Fibromyalgia patients. Additionally, this could also contribute to hyperactivity in the brain and result in insomnia.
Not only does this breakthrough finding mean that an actual “objective test” may soon exist to confirm a Fibromyalgia diagnosis, but it also means that researchers may be able to manufacture pharmaceuticals that will target these specific nerve endings to hopefully relieve patients of their Fibromyalgia pain and fatigue.
