THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE! I called your office after 3 weeks of agonizing over what to do about what UNUM alleged was an over-payment to me to the tune of $58.000. In addition to the alleged over-payments, UNUM reduced my benefits without warning, by $1,500.00 per month. Their assessment was sudden and based on my receipt of “retirement benefits”. However, the “retirement benefits” were survivor’s benefits awarded to me from my deceased husband, who’d listed me as his beneficiary. At 60 yrs old, having worked since I was 16, all through college and professionally for all my life until I became ill, I honestly did not know what to do. I thought/believed I owed UNUM, but didn’t know how to begin to pay them back, as now I could no longer pay for housing, utility bills or buy food. I am in chronic pain and had been suffering so, and NOW, I did not know what to do. I openly wept and actually. for a brief moment, felt so overwhelmed that I considered ending my life, because I could see no way out. I’d researched and came across you weeks prior, but thought you only could help me if I were denied UNUM benefits, so I didn’t call. After three weeks, being at my lowest, I decided to call your office for help and advice. It was then, after speaking with Attorney Jessup, I learned that my husband’s retirement. left to me, could not be offset by UNUM. I was encouraged to call UNUM, and inform them that this income was not MY retirement benefits but MY HUSBAND’S retirement awarded me at the time of his death. I was told, if I had any problems, to call your office back. Well, upon informing UNUM of these facts, per your advice and providing appropriate verification. My full benefits were restored and UNUM awarded me the back payment I was due. THANK YOU SO MUCH ATTORNEY STEPHEN JESSUP!
