Question

Why is Unum requesting updates to my SSDI file? Will they use it against me? Also, do I have to meet with them in person?

Asked on May 30th 2019 by Beth D.
Unum has paid my disability benefits for six years and until now, there have been no issues. In my recent benefits review, I provided the normal requests: medical records, physician’s statement, etc., and assumed the review was complete. My Unum rep called and now said I have to sign a form to allow them to review my entire Social Security Disability record. My disability was easily approved by the SSA years five ago, as I have two Blue Book conditions. I provided an abundance of medical records to them and my disabilities are obvious. In all this time, I’ve never even been asked by SSA to provide additional updates to my SSDI file. My UNUM rep told me she thought that was “weird.” Why are they requesting this now, and how are they going to use my SSDI file against me? Unum also asked to send a rep to meet with me face to face. My rep was VERY aggressive about this and kept repeating, “Are you saying NO, are you not going to meet with us?” I was on my way to a doctor’s appt. and basically hung up in tears. They’ve never treated me like this before. You’re thoughts on this would be most helpful.

Beth, I am sorry to hear of the trouble that Unum is giving you. Regarding Unum’s recent requests, the policy will govern what you should do. Regarding the potential meeting, it is likely that your policy will require such. It does not, however, have to be at you residence. It can be at a public place like a restaurant, public library, etc. With regards to the SSDI claim file, under most policies I do not believe it is a requirement. However, you may want to order the file yourself and review it to see how supportive of your claim it is. It is overwhelming supportive, then it may be beneficial to submit it in support of your claim with Unum. Should you wish to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact me.
