My employer uses unum for short-term disability. I was hospitalized back on june 13 and discharged on june 25. I was admitted for double pneumonia and hypoxia, which I ended up in ICU for four days on a ventilator. I was also given a bronscopy. Which I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease. Before leaving the hospital I contacted unum to start my claim. Everything sounded good and they were very nice. I left the hospital and the same day reaching home. A representative called me and said she was assigned to my claim. She advised she would be paying me out for the weeks I was in the hospital. I did receive the first payment, which was an elimination period. I received another payment after doing my follow up appointments with all my doctors. Every week since I’ve been discharge they ask for medical records from all doctors. The week of 7/13, they ask for medical records again and now for restrictions. My doctor has sent in the restrictions, advising Im not able to lift over 5 lbs and no strenuous work due to my lungs still being restricted. And I was also sent home on an oxygen to help me breathe. I have not received anymore payments and it shows on my claim pending extension. When I call. They always have the lady assign to my claim call me back. She tells me my claim is being reviewed by there medical records department. And just because I’m still on an oxygen machine doesn’t mean I can’t work. She said it would be five days and I would receive another letter about my claim. Its been over the time and Ive been calling and no one can give me a clear answer. CSR now keep telling me your claim is with the medical records department. At this point I’m frustrated and have bills needed to be paid. I’ve been with my employer for 20 plus years. Ive paid for this short term disability all these years out my paycheck. Now I’m actually sick and I can’t get paid.

Natalie, hopefully your claim will be approved. If they deny the STD claim then you will need to appeal the determination.
