My group long term disability insurance through Unum allows me to work part time and earn up to 20% of my pre-disability earnings without affecting my benefit. If I take advantage of this, and work 20-40% of my original hours to meet the 20% income threshold, will Unum use this to justify denying my benefit?

Brian:

If your Unum policy allows you to work while disabled and you are working on a limited basis but to your maximum ability, then Unum cannot reasonably deny your disability claim. Your question is very fact specific and there are factors such as the policy language, the type of work you are doing, how much you earn monthly, your doctor’s opinions on part time work, and how you justify the ability to work part time and not full time.
