Question

Is it bad practice for Unum to deny a claim because my wife was on disability prior to getting the life insurance policy? We've been paying on the policy for a year.

My wife passed away about 3 months ago, and she was on disability. She was able to get life insurance thru my work. She was on disability prior to getting the life insurance policy for about a year, and we have been paying on the policy for about a year. Unum denied the life insurance claim for this reason. Does that sound right? Does that sound like a bad faith practice? What would the next step be?

Fred, I am sorry for your loss. We would need to see a copy of the denial letter to determine what rights you may have against Unum. Please feel free to contact our office to discuss.
