Question

How can I avoid multiple offsets of my private DI policies by my SSDI amount?

Asked on June 6th 2023 by Erin
I am an anesthesiologist on disability after concussion, now receiving SSDI and employer sponsored UNUM LTDI. UNUM hired third party (Genx) to apply for SSDI for me. UNUM required lump sum payback and offset their monthly payment by SSDI. I also have two private policies that I paid for (Guardian and Ameritas) and also receive monthly payments from. Guardian emailed me on May 22, 2023 to state they noticed on my Claimant's Progress Report from Feb 2, 2023 that I said I was approved for SSDI at $3,590/mo and they have "asked that I submit a copy of my award letter to their office at my earliest convenience". I am concerned that Guardian is going to offset their monthly payment by the SSDI amount, like UNUM already does (double offset) and would like you to review my case, if appropriate. I currently live in Virginia and my practice was in Virginia, but I was living in Maryland at the time of the concussion. I continue to receive speech therapy twice a week at this time.

We have dealt with this issue in the past and it’s complicated. We would need to review both disability policies and then let you know if we think we can help.
