Question

Do I need to worry about foreign residency limitation?

Asked on July 17th 2025 by Hill
I have been on disability for 15 years for parkinsons from my individual policy (occupation specific Paul Revere - now Unum). I now want to move to live in Brazil to enjoy the sunshine. My policy does not mention anything about residency exclusions. Do I need to be worried about residency? Thanks.

Great question. If your policy does not have any residency limitation, then the disability insurance company cannot deny your benefits for moving out of the country. You are still required the meet the terms of your policy and provide medical support and be under the regular care of a doctor. Moving out of the county will likely trigger UNUM to look closely at your claim. If you have strong medical support, then you have nothing to worry about. Another option to consider is a UNUM lump sum buyout which we can assist you to obtain.
