Question

Could I get a buy out from Unum?

Asked on April 16th 2016 by George
I have a LTD policy through my former job. I am on SSDI and I will be finalizing a section 32 next month. My question is can I get a buy out from Unum. And how does my section 32 affect unum paying me. For now I only get 100 per month because of workman comp and SSDI. I mean maybe it would be better to get a lump sum from them if they offset me now that I getting a settlement. I do have attorneys for both SSDI and Workmanship Comp but this is a policy I paid extra through my former job so I think fresh eyes would be better. Thank you.

George, you could request a buyout from them, though they will likely run their numbers based on the current monthly benefit of $100. Any settlement will be associated and attributed to an offset as indicated in the policy for sources of other income stemming from a lump sum payment. They typically prorate the amount of the settlement over a certain period of time. Please feel free to contact our office to discuss further.
