Question
My dad needs to be on disability, but needs to work - how can we make this happen?
My dad is currently employed full-time but recently started dialysis which makes it challenging for him to work, due to appointments, dialysis treatment, etc. It's incredibly overwhelming and he is not able to focus on his health to the extent he needs. I am wondering if it's possible to apply for disability benefits even though they are still employed and what the process might entail. At this point in time, my dad cannot afford to work part-time. It's my understanding that he cannot be working full-time to apply for disability. However, only when disability benefits start could he step down to part-time.
Could you please provide guidance on whether my dad would qualify for disability benefits under these circumstances and what steps we should take moving forward? Any advice or information you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regards,
Amanda
Answer
I am sorry to hear about your dad’s situation. If he continues to earn the same income at his same job then he will not qualify for disability. If he has a disability that pays for loss of income due to working part time, then he may be able to work and get paid a partial disability benefit. The starting point is to obtain a copy of his disability policy and then contact our office to discuss his options.
