Hartford changed criteria of how they determine I'm disabled

The Hartford approved STD benefits, then LTD benefits in my case, due to multiple ligament/tendon tears that can’t be repaired. I visited the genetics departments of 2 major hospitals to identify the specific disorder, not for myself but for my children. My doctors have repeatedly stated that I can’t work in any field, repairs to existing damage is not possible and treatment is limited to pain management. Due to my condition, additional damage is imminent and will involve major organs, which is where I am now. The hospitals did not evaluate me in terms of abilities, which they clearly stated, but a representative of Hartford told the hospital to fill out a questionnaire according to what complications could be expected of someone with my disorder. This is not representative of my limitations, since I’ve clearly had this genetic disorder since birth, but had no debilitating complications until later in life. I was never on disability due to the disorder itself, rather the disorder was found as a result of irreversible damage. The Hartford ended by LTD benefits based on this evaluation but went a step further. My primary medical doctor repeatedly filled out the same forms, with the same information, stressing that I’m unable to work but the Hartford challenged this determination. With genetic info in hand, they sent this to my primary doctor to challenge his opinion. After this, the hospital sent a letter to the Hartford stating their disapproval of misleading tactics and clarified that I was NOT evaluated for abilities. The Hartford refuses to reverse the decision and I’ve been without any income for over one year. My social security hearing has been pending for three years, but I recently received a date in the near future. I don’t know if it’s wise to wait for the social security hearing or pursue LTD wrongly denied in court. I appealed the decision with the Hartford (denied) and I was told by several lawyers that, while I have a case, the courts rely on medical reviews and chances are not great that my case will be reviewed thoroughly. Again…the reason I was approved for disability has not changed and my condition has not improved, but worsened. I’m confused as to how The Hartford can change the criteria of how they’ve determined I’m disabled (actual damage vs labeling the condition that caused damage) and end disability benefits.
