Question

Can the Hartford collect short term disability payments that they say were due to their own mistakes?

Asked on March 11th 2025 by Pam
I was on short term disability due to a knee replacement. Shortly before I was due to go back to work, I fell and broke my wrist badly. I had to have surgery to insert a plate and two rods to stabilize shattered bones. I recently received a letter from the Hartford requesting $6000 in repayment for an error they made in calculating my benefits. Do I have to repay this? I have since been laid off from that position and am in no way able to cover this.

Technically, Hartford has the right to request repayment even though it was due to their mistake. Often, they will work with you on a repayment plan, rather than a lump sum payment, particularly if you make them aware of the financial hardship it will case you.
