Question

Do I meet the criteria for claiming disability if I have MS?

Asked on February 16th 2014 by Debi
I have not applied for disability yet. I have Multiple Sclerosis. I am a teacher and have been able to do my job well until recently. I am considering putting in for disability since my health is declining and the stress of the job has had a negative affect on my health. I guess what I would like to know is what they will be looking for in order to label me as disabled so I can stop working. I appear to be healthy and have not needed to call in sick. I have accumulated 180 sick days over my 28 year career. The reality is that the stress of the job has caused heart arythemias and palpitations. I have had a neuropsych exam which documents a decline in my cognitive abilities which affects my teaching. I suffer from fatigue but that only becomes apparent when I get home. I need to know what the criteria is for claiming disability. Do I qualify? And what happens if I apply and am rejected? Can I reapply?
