MetLife: Mental Health and Physical Disabilities

Asked on May 31st 2023 by SOS
I’m a Financial Advisor with chronic pain/fatigue & fibromyalgia. I’m actually heading to Mayo to identify if I have an autoimmune disease. I need to focus on my health & have a MetLife Group policy that pays until I am 67yrs old. HOWEVER, I also have PTSD. Mental Heath disorders are only covered for 2 years plus it can be argued that my physical conditions have manifested from my mental health. I am concerned that MetLife will say my disability is not physical and my benefits will be denied after 2 yrs if even approved at all.

Can I legally only give MetLife access to relevant info or do I have to give them access to ALL my info? Do I have any rights to limit IME apts or private investigator efforts?

I appreciate your help as I am the main income earner in my family. I cannot lose my job and be denied benefits.

If you have physical disabilities that prevent you from working then you have options to get around the mental nervous limitation. Your policy requires you to provide them with authorizations but you can attempt to limit the scope. I would do what it takes to get approved and make sure MetLife has all medical documentation for both physical and Mental issues. Do not refuse to attend an IME exam or you could bar your right to recover disability benefits.
