My experience with Dell & Schaefer began after a prolonged and frustrating experience with my disability carrier subsequent to contracting an illness which left me incapacitated. As a few examples of the frustration I am referencing: I had been accused by the ‘doctors’ appointed by my carrier to review my case as being a narcissistic fraud; the carrier sent a man to my home in the country unannounced to interview me (while I was not there but my wife and small children were); the carrier seemed to be fighting my doctor’s diagnosis and statement regarding my disability and illness; the carrier was not communicating well with me and was being cryptic with responses to legitimate questions.

I finally was so stressed from what should have been a simple process, and exhausted from the emotional and mental toll of filing a claim, that I was about to give up in the interest of maintaining what little health I had left and not wasting it fighting my carrier. I reached out to Greg Dell and he immediately set up a time to talk with Stephen Jessup and himself. I told them I just couldn’t keep managing the process – that the fight was taking its toll and I was inclined to either ‘tap out’ or quit altogether. After reviewing my case they were more than happy to drive their tank into the battle which I had been fighting with a handgun (Mr. Dell’s example). I signed with Dell & Schaefer, and suffice it to say this ‘tank’ comment seems to have been true as the very same day my carrier received the letter from Dell & Schaefer saying I had engaged their services is the same day my claim was approved.

I was curious to see how service would be after they had me contractually obligated to them. I have been impressed on this front as well. Every effort to correspond receives a response within 24 hours. Mr. Jessup is my primary contact and I have received more than one personal note from him encouraging me as I battle my illness; I believe that he really does care beyond just the financial interest the firm has in my case. On the business side of my interaction with them, I have been impressed with the thoroughness and timeliness of all responses – no matter how unimportant they might seem to Mr. Jessup. On the occasion when a question is more administrative in nature and Mr. Jessup or Mr. Dell need to defer to one of their staff, the staff is equally as timely and thorough and professional in their responses.

The stress and frustration of dealing with my carrier are gone; this benefit in and of itself is priceless. To add, I feel the benefit I gain from having Dell & Schaefer as my advocates makes their fees seem to be an excellent value.

When I first called Dell & Schaefer from half way across the country, Steven Dell called me backed and he took my case very seriously and acted quickly to help me apply for benefits. His work got me the benefits I deserved. When I stopped getting benefits because the insurance company thought they no longer had to pay them, Steven Dell appealed the decision in a timely fashion all the while reassuring me as I panicked. His knowledge of the law and of my policy made my appeal very strong.

When they denied my appeal he was immediately on the phone with the attorneys for the insurance company and with very strong arguments, he negotiated a significant settlement for me. All during this time he responded to my emails and phone calls in a timely fashion and he was able to reassure me regarding the time that the process took. Two days before Christmas, I received a call from MetLife Insurance. The woman stated to me, that my disability insurance, that I paid premiums 11 years through my employer was ending. She stated to me that the decision was for me to return to work. I was so upset and throughout the holidays, I spent crying. I knew I had been found disabled by the SSDI and I am in no way able to return to work. I also knew what a strain this would be on my husband, my losing the benefits per month. We were struggling trying to get used to me drawing SSDI and not my normal salary as it was. I contacted Dell & Schaefer by email and by phone and I spoke with Attorney Alexander Palamara with Dell & Schaefer. He advised to fax all documentation I had, and they would set up a conference call. After a conference call was held I decided to hire Alex and sent him back a signed contract. All done over the phone and fax!

My disability insurance company gladly cashed the premium checks for 16 years, but turned a blind eye to my multiple medical disability claims. Being unemployed in constant pain for well over a year and having spinal surgery for the condition didn’t impress them, they ended up ignoring me.

Having never been in involved in a contentious legal case before, it was clear I was out of my depth and needed professional legal consultation. The ERISA appeal Ms. Alters sent to the insurance company was well researched for my state’s laws (which are some of the strictest in the country) and made it clear we wouldn’t be ignored. I read it several times, appreciated it a bit more with each reading. I surely felt she was on MY side and my previously *very* high stress level dropped considerably.

I can’t say enough great things about Alex Palamara. He is very professional. Anytime I emailed him or left a message for him, he responded very quickly. Thank God I did cause I was denied by Reliance Standard and was so unhappy after I had been paid since 2009  and then they said I can go back to work not knowing I was set up for surgery. After suffering with the symptoms of ME/CFS for nearly 3 years, I was finally diagnosed with ME/CFS in August of 2011. I filed a claim and was approved by my disability insurance carrier initially. After a little over one year of not working, I started seeing some minor improvement. I told my doctor about the improvement and my carrier took that as news that I was now ready to return to work, which was far from the truth. My doctor told me not to go back to work yet, knowing it would only set me back and reverse my progress. My insurance carrier did not care and they made me attempt work. If I didn’t follow their rules they were going to drop me. I had no idea what to do or what my rights were in my disability contract. I called Greg Dell.

Greg gave me great advice. He spent a great deal of time on the phone with me answering all my questions, explaining all my options and recommending the best course of action. He was able to explain things to them that just made sense. I have been working with him for well over a year. He could articulate what I and my doctors were saying that I was not able to on my own. Anyone with ME/CFS knows how incredibly hard and difficult it is to try and explain your symptoms and limitations to someone.

Greg actually gets it and is who you want in your corner when you’re dealing with an insurance company that is not your friend. Greg was able to get me back on total disability with no work requirement. Unfortunately the work I had to do for those months in between did set me way back in my recovery, but that only makes me wish I had gone with Greg from the get go instead of waiting for a crisis that could have been prevented.

Nothing. After dealing with my insurance carrier on my own and now having Greg, the difference is night and day. It’s a massive relief.

A year ago in August I had the unfortunate situation where I injured my left hand playing in a recreational adult ice hockey game. My first reaction was fear, panic, and my work career is in danger. I was confronted with the daunting task of fighting an uphill appeal battle with MetLife, after being disabled since 2004. Metlife decided to discontinue my payments and the ERISA rules were not in my favor.

After researching to find a competent law firm, I decided to engage Dell & Schaefer; the pressure of trying to personally deal with insurance company was relieved. When I became disabled early in my career as a dentist, I was expecting the disability insurance process to be a nightmare. With the help of Mr. Jessup and his team, it was far better than I ever thought it could be.
