Question

What is the best LTD policy to get?

Asked on December 28th 2023 by Barlow
My hearing is getting worse and it is unlikely, I think, I will be awarded disability on my employer's policy through Prudential, both because they are notoriously resistant to claims and my disability has progressed slowly since birth. The biggest challenge is that my hearing loss is profound now and understanding speech requires more thinking with each person added to the conversation. I have recently requested accommodations that are helping but I feel that I have a year, maybe two before it gets to the point I cannot do my job at all. I am already unable to apply for new jobs (successfully) in my field due to my hearing. I am 55 and work for a university, so I have never paid into social security. Based on your videos, I infer that a non-Erisa policy would be best, and would like your recommendation for which company to get one with. Thank you.

We would recommend you speak with agents for Northwestern Mutual, Guardian, Mass Mutual and Principal or Standard to see what your options are with non-ERISA disability policies. That being said, policies would be contingent on medical history and any existing medical conditions would likely be precluded from coverage under the policy. You note that you work for a university - if the university you work for is a state university your policy would be exempt from ERISA, which would be a huge benefit to your overall claim. Please feel free to contact our office if you would like to discuss your situation in greater detail.
