Due to my vision and health issues testimonials are not typical of me. Dell & Schaefer however did such a sensational, and professional job we felt it absolutely necessary to share the experience.

I had been thinking of pursuing a lump settlement on long term disability with the insurance company for some time. Decided on Dell & Schaefer after much research on several firms across the country. Residing in the Midwest did cause some reservations about choosing a firm around 1500 miles away. However shortly after choosing Dell & Schaefer my concerns where quickly put to rest by how proficient the team is, and how they are always there with you. Never waited for a response and always felt like we knew exactly what was going on every step of the way.

I got the pleasure of working with Mr. Stephen Jessup Esquire, along with Sonia R. Nogueira, and team on my case. After contemplating my situation Steve was contacted to let him know it would be about three months before moving forward. I mention this because no pressure was ever felt to pursue or take a settlement and the firm awaited me to contact them again. No annoying emails, calls, letters, or any type of pressure to hire them. When questions arose the team was right there for me through the entire process and only a phone call or email away. Never had to wait for a response before or after retention. Mr. Jessup at one point during my case was out of country and still offered guidance when needed, almost immediately after emailing. Sonia also went above and beyond and took my call around six P.M. on a Friday to help me with some document questions. Simply an incredible level of service that seems rare anymore. Within less than four weeks we had reached a settlement agreement, and funds where in my account about two hassle free weeks later. This all transpired even with delays of the insurance rep taking vacation twice. Overall my settlement expectations where far exceeded. During the original consultation Mr. Jessup mentioned a monetary figure that was lower than the actual final settlement. There where no false promises or over inflated estimates as sometimes found elsewhere. Just an upfront honest answer of what could be to come. During the process I still received my monthly benefit and never had to deal with the insurance company directly. This in itself took so much stress out of my life. After three years I no longer had to continually jump through hoops when the insurance company requested something or worry that I might undeservedly lose benefits.

The above is just a small part of my experience on how I felt the professional and courteous team was always willing to go the extra mile. Nothing. Experience has been great. Whole claim took a while to get approved but that was due to insurance company delays, not from Dell & Schaefer.

Cesar was wonderful. I was given three different attorney firms by someone (I can’t even remember the other ones) but he was the second call I made and stopped there. Both Cesar and his legal assistant were so kind and helpful. Any time he called me for information or with a status of my case he was so sensitive to my needs/issues. He was honest and up front and very fair.

This may seem like sarcastic comment, but I assure you it is not. I would only recommend that a policy is passed that whenever an entity purchases an insurance policy to provide as disability income that a Dell & Schaefer packet/information be attached. Again, balance.

Rachel and team were professional, knowledgeable and competent in helping me with my disability insurance claim denial. I would not have been able to do this work myself successfully. I had an illness best known as Chronic Lyme (I have more issues than that but that’s what I understood my diagnosis to be at the time of claim denial). This is a complex illness that is plagued with faulty testing, delayed diagnosis, inconsistent prognosis/ treatment outcomes, and vague (deniable) symptoms.

Advances in the disease’s treatment have stalled for decades due to financial & reputational conflicts of interest that exist across the healthcare/ insurance / government industries. It is a major thing to go against, and a very complex & constantly evolving issue, and Rachel was very familiar with all the chronic Lyme ‘inside baseball.’ Not many people want to get involved with anything Chronic Lyme-related if they have a choice. Finding an attorney that has expertise in this area is a rare find, and I can attest to the fact that Rachel meets this hard-to-find criteria and delivered results well beyond what I could have achieved without her.

What could we do to improve?
I wanted more “hand holding” in the beginning (ie more proactive communication / expectations management), and wanted to see draft of my appeal letter earlier than I did. But to be fair they were always promptly responsive and attentive and met every deadline and delivered results, and some of my worry in this area was because I was terrified and sick and stressed and this was of major importance in my life, not because the communication was inadequate. Still, this is how I imagine most clients in this situation would feel, so this is feedback worth considering.

Alex is a true hard working, smart attorney who sets realistic goals and pursues them. His perseverance is remarkable and that is what you need when working with Unum type LTD companies. If it weren’t for Attorney Rachel Alters, I would have probably been living on the streets, living in a cardboard box, or maybe not even be here today. I was denied numerous times by my own Short Term and Long Term Insurance Company that I had paid years of premiums to. I figured that since it was my Insurance Company that I wouldn’t have any problems with submitting a claim and getting it approved. Was I wrong… Then the claims adjusters started playing head games with me each time I contact them or mailed them any additional information. Nothing seemed to matter. Eventually I would always get a rejection/denial letter in the mail. I was so irritated and frustrated as I also had to deal with my illness and go without any income for almost 2 years.

I even researched and contacted numerous local lawyers. They would either state that they wouldn’t take the case, take the case and either do nothing with the file or at a later date contact me to inform that they didn’t practice in that particular area.
