Question

CPA and lawyer covered under the policy?

Asked on January 9th 2026 by David
I am a licensed CPA and lawyer. I have had my AICPA disability insurance policy since becoming a licensed CPA in 2017. Although I am a lawyer, my work primarily deals with SEC filings, capital markets transactions, and things that heavily involve my CPA and accounting background. I just listened to your youtube video on the AICPA disability insurance and I am wondering if I am covered under the policy? I also asked for a free consultation. My wife who is also a CPA has the same insurance. She works in assurance like she did at PwC, but query whether she is covered under her policy as well?

David, looking quickly at a copy of the AICPA policy, it appears that in order to be a covered person under the policy, beyond being a member of the AICPA, less than age 70, having enrolled in coverage and paying premiums, it appears you must be working at least 17.5 hours per week. While I did a basic review of the policy, my quick glance shows no requirements that you must be working as a CPA or that your own occupation is currently that of a CPA. While I am happy to speak with you to take a deeper dive into the policy and your and your wife’s coverage, I believe you both should be covered under the policy so long as you are members of the AICPA and continue to pay premiums.
